Hotel ROAS, ROI and Campaign Performance Explained

Calculate advertising efficiency and put attributed revenue into the wider hotel commercial picture.

Calculate ROAS correctly

Return on ad spend (ROAS) is the revenue attributed to advertising divided by media spend. For example, $12,000 in attributed booking revenue divided by $3,000 in advertising spend produces a 4x ROAS. State whether revenue is gross or net and whether media fees and other costs are included.

Distinguish revenue from profit

ROAS is not profit. A high booking value may still bring substantial commission, operating expense or cancellation risk. ROI considers net benefit in relation to the investment. Managers should review both campaign efficiency and business economics before deciding where to increase spend.

Account for attribution uncertainty

Reported ROAS depends on attribution rules, source data and time windows. Different channels can support different stages of a purchase journey. Comparing numbers from platforms that count bookings differently can mislead; standardize definitions or explain the limitations.

Use supporting hotel metrics

Cost per confirmed booking, average booking value, lead time, length of stay and room nights add context to ROAS. Some markets may generate fewer bookings but higher value. Others may produce shorter stays or late booking windows. Segment reporting can reveal these trade-offs.

Create a reliable review rhythm

Review results at intervals that suit the booking window and campaign size. Track seasonal changes, rate adjustments and inventory constraints. Record the decisions made, the hypothesis behind each change and the metric used to evaluate the outcome.
